Aikido
Meditation in Action
Focused Martial Arts Training in a Welcoming Community
Our cooperative training model allows for both a dynamic and adaptable practice. In Aikido we absorb and redirect the energy of an attack in a way that keeps everyone safe. Learning to roll and fall safely is foundational in Aikido. You will learn techniques that employ circular movements, timing and blending to neutralize attacks with throws or joint locks. Consistent practice helps to develop mental focus, core strength, balance and flexibility.
Weapons Work in Aikido
When we train with a bokken (wooden sword), a jo (short staff) or a tanto (wooden knife), we work on awareness of distance, timing, and body manipulation. We practice solo kata, paired Kumi atachi, and weapon take-aways. Not only is playing with weapons fun, it gives us insight into our empty-handed techniques.

Every Third Thursday
Experience the possibilities of this unique martial art in a free intro class every THIRD THURSDAY of the month, as we welcome newcomers to step on the mat.
Taught by Rivertide Center Co-Founder Arielle Herman
The cooperative training style of aikido is unique in the world of martial arts training. Our children’s program teaches aikido foundations such as falling and rolling safely, with emphasis on working together and self-regulation. There will be games and play and laughter in all the classes!
Personalized, one-on-one instruction
Private lessons are intended to meet individual needs based on experience and goals. Private lessons can be scheduled with Patrick or Arielle.
Private Iaido Lessons
Iaido is a moving meditation as well as a great way to cultivate balance, focus and coordination. Based on the Japanese Katana, in this practice we use an Iaito, which is a steel or aluminum blade without a sharp edge.
